She Don’t Make False Claims (Arcade Fire/David Bowie, Central Park Summerstage)

posted 09/16/2005

Arcade Fire, and Some Tall Dude's Head

God bless the Arcade Fire kids; they’re still having fun with it.

But there’ve been some changes since I saw them last year:

They’ve adopted a couple players from their post-rockin’ opening act:  Bell Orchestre’s viola player is now AF’s 2nd violin, and their French hornist has dragged his backwards instrument up along with him...

Bell Orchestre

...it seems that Napoleon Dynamite has gotten an understudy...

Will Butler, Richard Reed Parry

...and the band has added a Thin White Duke.

David BowieDavid Bowie

David Bowie, as had been rumored, re-joined the band (after having gotten them on to prime time network television late last week).  The band and he had a good go at “Queen Bitch;” then he and Win traded off on “Wake Up” the same way they did on “Fashion Rocks.”

I don’t know whether to be impressed or embarrassed that I managed to get red eye in my Bowie pics.  I wasn’t that close; my flash is out of control... Or Nic Roeg was right:  He really is an alien.

Jeez:  Arcade Fire, David Bowie, and Cloud Cult (I went to 169 Bar afterwards and caught them for the second time this week) in a single day.  Perhaps there’s an upside to this CMJ nonsense after all.  More pics and words if ever I get a chance.  Check back post-CMJ.  Until then, you can find more pics at Brooklyn Vegan (naturally) and at arcadefire.net.
