While I tend to other things, listen to this:
That’s Steve Albini’s voice at the beginning. There are no others.
If anyone has the right to lay claim to Godspeed You Black Emperor!’s abandoned stretch of apocalyptic post-rock, the Japanese do. Above is the lengthy – fifteen minutes-plus – centerpiece to Mono’s latest CD, You Are There, which You Should Buy. It’s quiet-quiet-quiet and loud-loud-loud, gorgeous and passionate.
While not as all-round fulfilling as GYBE!, that band’s fans – as well as those of Explosions in the Sky and Do Make Say Think – should find much to like, here.
Mono is currently touring with Chicago post-metallers(?) Pelican; they return to NYC on June 9th to headline a show at Northsix (tix).
(There is also a fan-run Mono myspace page.)
Post-rock fans are actually in for a good run, this month.
Mogwai is at Webster Hall, this weekend – and Slint’s David Pajo is opening on Saturday. (tix)
On the 25th, the too-often-overlooked before-their-time (with both their music, and their punctuation) Rachel’s is playing Merkin Hall with The Clogs. Reserved seating for that one; tickets are available online and at the box office.
