Less Math Talk, More Math Rock

posted 01/12/2007

Backed up and falling behind. I’m not holding all these 600+ lists hostage, I swear.

(Though I could use the money. I also critique weddings and bar/bat mitzvahs!)

Soon, children, soon. Not far now.  Monday (duh, holiday) Tuesday.  Ish.  Heavy on the Ish. (UPDATE:  It's actually finished - no really - but my host is doing some sort of server upgrade that makes it impossible to upload/delete files.  So the spreadsheets and the whole Ta-Da! bullshit is waiting on them.  If you want to just look at the results, I updated the Chart page yesterday - it's now 8 large .jpgs - there are 1421 different albums ranked there.  The old chart is now here, for comparison's sake.)

Just to give you an idea what my head sounds like:

An almost perfect marriage of performer and material, that’s a Schoolhouse Rock cover – but one of those SR segments that worked better as a gateway drug than a learning tool. That’s okay. The 90s New York band just gets to fuck with space as well as time. All together now: “Dek, el, do...”

Originally recorded for the Schoolhouse Rock! Rocks tribute CD, the track’s one of a couple extras included in Matador’s recently-released must-have complete-catalog-(plus-DVD)-in-a-box Chavez reissue Better Days Will Haunt You. Of the many, many shows I’ve missed recently, the band’s recent Warsaw reunion tops of my list of regrets. All these 2006 Top Tens have made 1996 sound really, really good.

Here are Matador’s giveaway tracks:

Totally.

If you’re not at The dB’s or Gil Mantera Saturday night, O’Death – come on, do I do concert announcements unless they’re involved? – is playing Sin-é. They’re headlining a Friction bill that also includes Mahogany, Daylight’s for the Birds and Relay (plus DJ This Guymore info).  Advance tix are available... though (shhhh) I’m secretly hoping no one shows up. The first time I saw O’D it was in a mostly-empty Sin-é and it was magic. Dark, howly magic.

And would you look at this... a couple Saturdays later (1/27), Underrated is putting Sure Juror on the same stage. That band, whose first CD is still available for free download, has second CD Smut up for sale.
