Tonight was the third time I’ve seen O’Death in three months, and everything I’ve said before still holds. Well... bassist Jesse Newman’s beard is bushier (and Kool-Aid red), frontman Greg Jamie’s beard less so; drummer David Rogers-Kerry now has a Mohawk, and now looks just as crazy as he be. This was, honestly, a bit of a sloppy send-off. There were sound problems, tuning problems, a couple new songs caught in flagrante delicto. But kinks got shaken out and, by the end, the basement at Fat Baby was rumbling: The band can fill whatever space you got with its own holler, but the hoedown pit was hollerin’ back just as fierce. There’s not a better closer, on Earth or in the hereafter, than “Nathaniel.” Believe you me, when they break that out there ain’t no place else you want to be doin’ your lawdy-lawdyin’.
But you don’t have to believe me (or – it keeps growing – Yeti’s or Danfun’s or Indie-licious’ or 3xWes’ or Music Slut’s or...): You can check ‘em out yourself. The boys are going on a tour of biblical proportions – forty days, etc. – and if you’re reading this from within the borders of these here U-nited States you owe yourself to git down and get your yell on.

Holy crap. They gave themselves two whole days off, and then started doubling up. Somewhere, James Brown’s kissing a title goodbye.
This band loves to play.
I have no idea what kinds of venues these are – these guy’d probably be just as happy playing a back alley, banging trash can lids together – but I’d give my eye teeth to see them at Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace. Or the Secret Squirrel Mansion. Or Goldwood’s Nilbog House. If you’re in NYC, don’t worry: As they is wont to do, O’Death already has five local dates scheduled after the tour, including two on the night of its homecoming (one at the Knitting Factory Tap Bar (tix), one at Maiden Brooklyn) and the 9/26 Beg Yr Pardon browniefest at the Delancey. When you go, don’t forget to bring money for their album, Head Home; if they’re not coming to your neck of the woods (is that even possible?) or want to familiarize yourself beforehandlike, it’s available at CDBaby. Coda: The set tonight was waaay too short; they were, ostensibly, just an opening act at a magazine release party. But an encore was demanded, and – though they’d already packed most of their instruments away – delivered. They just started banging on whatever, and screamsinging... Fiddler Bob Pycior was dancing in the crowd, grabbed someone’s empty and started whacking his bow against it.
Go, kids, all of you. Enjoy yourselves.
