
So, hooray.
It's hard to not love the people in this parade. The colors, the creativity, the great glorious goof of it all. It's as if this town loved Halloween so much it invented a second one, stuck it on the beach. Takes all kinds, takes all comers. There are no nationality/sexuality/age/race/class requirements, there's no secret handshake. Families and free spirits, babies and boobies. Freaks! One of us, one of us.
Involved assemblages. Hand-woven finery. Discount day-glo wigs and birthday suits.
Photographers were walking around the staging area - $5 or a working press pass to get in - with lenses as long as the Parachute Jump is tall, lenses almost as long as the wait at Nathan's. And people like me, phutzing with peashooters. But when you've got a beautiful day and beautiful people, you can't go too wrong.
