Too often I consider things until their due's got interest and I've lost mine, because I'm not all that smart or perceptive and have this damned urge to squeeze exactly the right stuff out of a moment or song or whatever. (I'm not saying I'm considerate, I'm saying I'm a considerer.) So I dilly over things until my internal Earth screeches time snaps nothing ever ever happens OR everything gets blurted out in ridiculous compensational quantity long after I've thought the urgency right off it. Tossing a cold stone in the air where you're sure a bird was, once. That.
If this isn't your first time here, you've probably noticed.
All that's by way of introduction to Bonnie Baxter (myspace, blog), hereby under consideration, whom I'm presenting underconsidered. But this is dreamy:
Bonnie Baxter - One to Change (mp3)
Seen the name, haven't seen the player. Easy to not consider a "Bonnie Baxter" at all; as pleasantly alliterative as the title might be, it's still just a name, there are so many names, this one sounds like it could belong to an actress who played Mom on an early ‘80s sitcom. You read that Baxter's from Bushwick by way of Connecticut (Connecticut! Are you ready to ROCK?). So you think she might have low-maintenance hair and a pastel sweater and and a nice smile, and she might torture you to death with pleasant crap. "Ingrid Michaelson" is a name, too, you know. But then you catch a couple concert pics and, hey, okay what is she trying to sound like there, you hope maybe it sounds like speed metal. It doesn't, but.
She's a young woman who obviously enjoys her Radiohead, has at least a little desire to rock out, has this lovely voice that falls somewhere between the ladies from Lush and that chick from The Cranes, somewhere up there. This is one of three songs available for free download from her When You Are Hollow EP. The vocals could be stronger, diaphragm-wise, and the whole thing could probably use a bit more confidence, but it's on repeat, let's not overconsider things, it's Friday.
Anyway, here's some Goblin Cock (myspace):
Goblin Cock - Big Up Your Willies (mp3)(buy)
They have a new record, Come With Me if You Want to Live, and will be at the Highline Ballroom on February 11th (tix). Bring something to sacrifice.
You hit on two great artists today! I've got Goblin Cock on my to-do list,
at first because of the name, but after some investigation, because the
history and sound of the band is just too awesome to ignore. And as I'm
always on the lookout for new female voices (new to me at least), I'm
loving Bonnie Baxter. Thanks so much!
