...Saying it’s not a good Cronenberg film, though, doesn’t mean it’s not a good film. The director’s intelligence and peripheral concerns keep it from devolving into some Death Wish-ish revenge thriller; nor does he make this a simple Straw Dogs-style parable. He’s an excellent director of actors, and gets solid performances from Mortensen (whose eyes are expressive enough that he should have forgone playing with accents) and Bello. The director’s usual flaws show, too: Real-world procedures come off as awkward and unlikely; his lens usually trained on self-contained compositions, he’s always been less competent when a story slops outside his Petri dish...
